Doug Erwin is a Senior Scientist and Curator in the Department of Paleobiology at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. His paleontological and developmental projects have included the end-Permian mass extinction, the Ediacaran-Cambrian diversification of animals, and the evolution of gene regulatory networks. His current research focuses on evolutionary innovation and paleoecology.  He is the co-author (with Jim Valentine) of The Cambrian Explosion: The Construction of Animal Biodiversity (2013, Roberts Publishing).
